You may have heard by now that granola, even though it's considered a health food, can actually be a sneaky source of added sugars. In fact, some granolas have as much as 15-20 grams of added sugar in just a 1/4 cup serving. That's because most granolas out there start with a base of oats that get coated in sugary syrup to make the pieces clump together.
But granola doesn't have to be a source of so much added sugar. In fact, it doesn't even have to be sweet. The saccharin sweetness of most granolas means they are only used in sweet ways, creating even more of a high sugar situation when you eat them.
Savory granola is the opposite. It doesn't have an over-the-top sweet flavor, which means in can be enjoyed in so many more ways. Think: over top of salads, avocado toast, sprinkled on creamy soups, and even served in traditional ways, like over yogurt or fruit, to balance out the sweetness.
What Is Savory Granola?
Savory granola is not sweet. It has more of a nutty, natural, and salty flavor to it than traditional sugar-coated granola does. Therefore, it can be used in a variety of ways, including sweet and savory options.
For example, where you wouldn't sprinkle traditional sweet granola over top of a salad, savory granola makes a delicious and natural pairing for salads, hummus, avocado toast, veggies, creamy soups, and even as a breading for chicken and fish. It can also be used to make low-sugar snacks and add perfect crunch to already-sweet foods, such as chocolate.

What's In Struesli Savory + Seed
None of Struesli's grain-free granolas have added sugars, which means they don't spike blood sugar like traditional granolas do, and you aren't limited in how you can use them.
The Struesli Savory + Seed flavor is a chef-crafted, nut-free version of Struesli that contains many nutritious seeds and has a delicious savory-salty flavor that's a great match for many foods.
Like all flavors of Struesli, Struesli Savory + Seed contains only real-food ingredients and has no added sugars, sweeteners, cheap fillers, or artificial additives. It is also USDA Organic certified, as well as certified gluten free, and 100% plant based.
One main difference between Savory + Seed and Struesli Original is that the Savory + Seed flavor is 100% nut free. Whereas Struesli Original contains walnuts, pecans, and flaked coconut, Struesli Savory + Seed contains pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds.
The full list of ingredients in Struesli Savory + Seed are:
- organic tiger nuts*
- organic pumpkin seeds
- organic sunflower seeds
- organic refined coconut oil*
- organic golden flax meal
- organic hemp hearts
- organic chia seeds
- flaked salt
* People sometimes mistake tiger nuts or coconut as a nut. Tiger nuts are not a nut, bean, or seed, but rather a root vegetable (a tuber) that's low in carbohydrate and rich in prebiotic fiber. Coconut is not a nut, either, but rather a drupe (a stone fruit), and it is safe for people who have a nut allergy to eat coconut. In Struesli, only responsibly and ethically sourced organic coconut products are used.
How Is The Savory + Seed Flavor Different?
When founder and chef Adrienne set out to create Struesli, she had many different flavors of the grain-free granola in mind. Unlike Struesli Original and Struesli Cacao + Coffee, the Struesli Savory + Seed does not contain nuts. Always keen on making options that available to as many people as possible, Adrienne had a vision that people with nut allergies or those who prefer products without walnuts and pecans could be able to enjoy Struesli, too!
Another unique attribute of this savory granola is that Struesli Savory + Seed contains five kinds of nutritious seeds: pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, golden flax meal (ground flax seeds), hemp hearts (aka hemp seeds), and chia seeds. Pumpkin seeds are an especially rich source of antioxidant vitamin E and contain inflammation-fighting antioxidants. Pumpkin seeds are also full of nutrients that have cardio-protective effects, including magnesium, zinc, unsaturated fats, and fiber. Sunflower seeds are an equally nutritious addition, providing healthy fats, plant compounds, and minerals that have been linked to lowered risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Finally, Struesli Savory + Seed has a savory-salty flavor profile that makes is perfect for snacking out of hand and enjoying in many ways. None of the Struesli products contain added sugars or sweeteners, so none of them are overtly sweet, however Struesli Original and Struesli Cacao + Coffee have some mild natural sweetness. The Savory + Seed version has a buttery, earthy, and salty flavor profile.
